The Heritage Development Institute presents basics and advanced-level day-long workshops to build the knowledge, skills, and network of professionals in the heritage development field. The Institute provides workshops regularly at national venues and develops customized events for regions with specific educational needs.
Day-long Institute workshops are held annually during the National Trust for Historic Preservation Conference and by special request. The Center for Historic Preservation at Middle Tennessee State University coordinates the content, registration and workshop logistics in cooperation with host facilities.
"Basics of Heritage Areas" courses are available to advance a locality or region's knowledge, understanding and advocacy of heritage area development, and to advance the skills and know-how of existing and potential areas in organizing, managing, marketing and sustaining heritage areas and heritage programs. Advanced, topic-specific courses are available for regions and organizations seeking a more intense and sophisticated learning experience to propel existing efforts to the next level.
Basics courses are taught by around five prominent leaders in the National Heritage Area field, and generally run for about five hours, including a "Stump the Experts" working lunch. Each heritage area expert leads topic-specific sessions and discussions. The courses are an excellent opportunity to network with faculty and other attendees and to share experiences. Participants receive a binder containing guidelines and resources to take home.
